GPS in your GPS

GPS - Global Positioning Satellite. You all know what it is, but have you thought about the implications for such a tiny device?

In the future, GPS chips will be in EVERYTHING (...well almost). They are already in Cameras, iPhones and some peripherals electronic devices.

Dream big and tell me what implications this has for YOUR future, and what you think it might look like with GPS enabled devices.

  1. To me this seems like one more step towards the 'big brother' theory where in which one day everything we say, everywhere we go, and everything we do is watched, recorded and documented by the government. A few years ago I would never have thought this theory believable, but with the recent growth and evolution of modern technology this theory (as least in the technological side of things) is becoming more and more credible. Currently GPS chips are already used in mobile devices to help in many things such as vehicle tracking, weather monitoring and tracking people and animals. The future of GPS is huge, bound only by the imagination, although the development of technologies, such as the GPS chip, can have both good and bad effects depending on how and why it is used.
    Possible Positive uses/effects:
    • GPS chips that can be implanted into humans (like the ones currently used to locate animals) would have an amazing advantage in the area of finding missing persons, kidnappers, criminals, prison break outs, runaways, missing planes, plane and ship wrecks, people lost at sea etc. These chips would have a big impact on the legal system in the area of convicting criminals as the chips would be able to tell the police where the convicted person was at the time of the crime. Of course for these chips to really make a big impact they would have to be implanted into everyone.
    • GPS could be used to a larger extent in transportation such as cars, boats and aeroplanes. Currently GPS is used to locate the vehicle itself and direct the driver/pilot. In the future however GPS could be used with other technologies to actually guide the plane or car itself, relinquishing the need for a driver/pilot. This would have a major affect on many people, for example I would abolish jobs such as piloting, taxi driving, bus driving, ferry drivers and any other job involved with the manual driving of a vehicle. It would also affect the everyday person as the need to learn how to drive would also be abolished.
    • GPS technology would also have a great impact on the military although it is debatable whether the effect of such technologies would be more positive or negative. GPS is already used in the military in things such as missiles and GPS guided weapons, but the possibilities for building greater and more dangerous weapons are endless.
    Possible Negative Uses/Effects
    • GPS tracking chips implanted into humans could also be used in a negative was, such as the ‘Big Brother’ theory states. As the chips locate a person’s position they could be used to stalk or invade personal privacy.
    • GPS technology in the military as I said before has many possibilities however many of these may not be beneficial. It is possible that with the increase of technology that the military may develop weapons too dangerous to be used. There is also the fact that the Australian and the American military aren’t the only militaries that would incorporate GSP into their weapons systems.

  2. WEll.. i find the size of this GPS thingo is awesome. In the future having a GPS device in basically every would make life so much easier. Having a GPS in a say a mobile phone you would be able to track it, say if you lost it or it was stolen. If it was in a car and you were stranded people would be able to find you easily.
Maybe in the future because the GPS device is sooo small it would be possible to place one in each human. This may produce some issues, so i guess it could be a choice to people if they wanted it or not. By having a GPS device implanted into a human you will be able to track them when they are in need of help, they are standed or even kidnapped.
Implanting a GPS device into your children would be so efficient because if they were to be kidnapped, raped etc etc.. you would be able to find them, save them before it is tooo late..... there are a lot of crazy people out there!!
I think GPS is just good for finding how to get places, and for finding people or things.
GPS tracking chips are sooo small. If there was a criminal and you were scared they were going to get away it wouldnt be that hard to implant it into there skin.
If you wanted to stalk people this is what is bad about GPS devices. Paparazzi peoples would love this device, it wouldnt be that hard to stick it on a car, or place it into a make up product, hat, clothing etc.

  3. The idea of having a chip in everything I own would be handy there would no longer be a problem such as losing keys. If your car gets stolen the police would just use the GPS chip to track it. But there is also the issue that since we all use technology and technology is always with us what’s to stop someone knowing everywhere we go? What happens if the tracking technology getting into the hands of a terrorist, they could pinpoint someone important exact location, or where a high amount of people gather. Some animals already have a chip in them so if they run away the owner can track them down. The armed forces have pluses and negatives also on one hand they can target an area to attack where there will be as little collateral damage as possible but the enemy will also have that advantage.

  4. well... this is big bro's next giant leap, being able to pin point exactly where anyone is just by the device their carrying. in terms of security, its going to have little effect on me, if you dont want to be tracked you dont use these devices (sides, people who dont want to be found just use pre-paid phones and only use them once before throwing them out, even if you place a tracker in pre-paid phones, you dont know who is using it as theirs no contract or anything required for purchase), though it may help a lot in tracking missing people in forests and in knocked over buildings. Really for me, GPS enabled devices have very little effect on me, i mean, weve allready got GPS' in phones right now so, its not going to make much difference if i had one in my camera or computer. it may help if one of these devices is stolen and you can just switch on the tracker and find out where the device is. Though evidently, reffering back to big brother, it will lead to a huge invasion of my privacy, like anyone can just use the device (if their smart enough) to find out exactly where i am.

  5. Creepy much?
I mean, imagine having the entire population tagged or everything big enough to be tagged fitted with some of GPS device and their every single movement is monitored on some computer somewhere. There would be nowhere to run, nowhere to hide and nowhere to go without feeling like you are being tracked, watched and followed.
Similarly, as everybody else has stated, it would support that 'big brother' theorem. The time when where people get 24hour surveillance and literally everything they do and say is monitored and observed. Which is totally an invasion of people's privacy and their right to have privacy (which then could be considered a denial of a basic human right.)
I mean, if iPods and mobiles had GPS tags attached or something that wasn't 'living' like school bags or something like a watch had a GPS tag attached, it would be a problem. You could still locate the iPod or the person wearing the watch or the necklace or had the schoolbag with them, then sure go nuts, maybe I could find my iPod then..
But tagging people, dogs, cats, horses, birds etc is an invasion of privacy and probably has more disadvantages and strings attached then a life without GPS tags implanted into the world's population.

  6. Well in a career in the military is hopefully in my future and this really can help in cases of combat no matter the division you choose. In the military there is always gonna be a risk of "Blue on blue" or friendly fire, this can be reduced with the use of GPS, when calling in a fast air strike there is a lot of risk of mistaking identity with the fact that Airy Fairy pilots have a nice seat at a height that makes it almost impossible to identify in a area that is made of buildings of similar size and design without troops on the grounds communication, this can change if there is a GPS system planted into the pilots HUD, identifying the position of the squad. In the case of Naval Battle there has been previous use of converted civilian vessels, like the one that sunk HMAS Sydney II, that have been to confuse naval vessels protecting an area, with the use of GPS on ships that are allowed and have been identified to be in that area will allow other vessels that may be dropping of supplies to a undercover special ops cell (sounds weird but not impossible)operating to create civil unrest, therefore stopping a Coup De Etat.

  7. The GPS has been a huge step up in technology for our world today, it has made turn by turn GPS possible and other tracking resources.

The advantages of having a GPS is using it as a tool if you get lost or need to find a place, these days most people use a GPS in their motor veichle to find their way around. It has increased the use of technology that is being used in our world today, which is saying more and more people are using technology.

If the GPS system was to involve and advance it could be a greater help than it is to the government when trying to track people or places. Already the technology that has been put in place is being used to find people via GPS. The next level would be to make a more advanced stystem that could track people faster.

Those are some of my views on future GPS systems

  8. If this happened which i know it will, it will freak everyone out. Having a satelite know where you are 24 hours every day of the week. Every day of your life. They have already started with cameras and iphones, next a gps will be in your house, your clothes and even your own body. For rebels and criminals, this sucks; they won't make a wrong move ever again. We'll know where they are, where they're running to and how they escaped from jail. In the army, they'll know where the enemy's hiding and the best entrance into their hideout is. In everyday life, we would know where our lost goods are. With all these positives comes the negatives. The cost of everything having a gps inserted or buying something with one already in will increase by heaps let alone the cost for the government to place them in and the cost of the satelites to enter space. However, as we all know, as technology gets older and older it becomes cheaper and cheaper, it only depends on when they plan to put gps' in everything. If its within the next few years it will be extremely expensive.

  9. A GPS in everything.... it is inevitably going to happen it the future. It will creep everyone out, i mean everyone. That means if someone hacks into the satelitte systems, they could find out where anyone is on the planet. But that would take a professional uber awesome hacker to do that. plus, i dont think it is even possible. I just wanted to freak some people out when they read my comment. So, anyway, i think it would be awesome to have a GPS chip in everything electronic. It would be very useful to have it even a pen. That would be even cooler to have a GPS in your normal ballpoint pen, if a business man gets lost somewhere , he just whips out his ballpoint pen and clicks a button which then shows a hologram from his pen to tell him where he is. That would be AWESOME!!! Also over time these GPS devices will get smaller and smaller and also cheaper. But with that positive there is a negative, you would never be able to catch up with the technology. It will be constantly upgrading to make it better and better. About the hacking thing above, if it did happen (IF it did) and terrorists get their hands on it, it would put the world in fear and chaos. Thats all!

  10. I don't know. I think this is something the feds would want because they want to know about everything. nah jokes. But really I think that having GPs in almost everything would be a good thing because you would be able to find lost things such as your phone, car or calculator etc. But I think if we, humans had GPS's in our body, it would cause some issues like people knowing everywhere you go with you not having any privacy at all. Plus when everything has a GPS in them, people such as nerds or hackers can access them and stalk, mess the GPS or ruin other technology around you.

From my own point of view if GPS's are going to be everywhere in the future. I think it would cause chaos. There could a GPS planted by terrorist in something near or on a president or prime minister, then they would capture him/her and threaten the people. Computer nerds or hackers who have no lives can hack into them and cause disruption and chaos to the public like 'Die Hard 4.0'. That what I think would happen if GPS were everywhere in the future.

  11. for my future ther isnt a big need for a GPS because most of the training will be done on my own so there isnt a big need for them.
but if i had to use them then they would be usefull in training because of what we could do is put the cordenits into the GPS and make the students go run round to each point as quick as possible

  12. making gps part of everyday life would be an extremely controversial issue. its good in a sense but it might challenge basic human privacy rights.

    PROS:

pros include things as if your mobile phone got stolen you can find it, along with your camera, ipod etc (if they mean alot to you and have immense sentimental value).

cameras can record location so that when you load it onto the computer and view through them the location and time is recorded etc etc. haha ye:)

    CONS:

basic privacy right. if all our mobile phones had trackable gps. and we carry our phones on us like 24/7 then what if someone hacks into the network or whatnot and can track you down and... and... and.. kill you? hahaha :P

besides that, somethings are better left unknown. example a wife wants to know where her late-home husband is. so she uses the mobile gps tracker and finds himmm ...... (you know where) and well its dumb lol imho.

anywayssss. thts just me 2 cents.

    laterssssss.

  13. The implications of such a tiny device may be harmful or effective. Using it on humans can affect their lives but if they were in places of good use, like on animals or things to help track so it may be easier for searchers to hunt or search for the things of need. Using them on animal or prisoners it may help searchers find them so if they ran away in places where no one may be aware, there is this device to help search for them.
If they were implanted to each human being on earth, it would be one of the most unsafe thing for everyone; there won’t be privacy or the need of keeping your location to yourself. I reckon the most needed area, instead of human beings on earth, for this device, it should be placed in bigger places of needs like aeroplanes, helicopters etc. where these big transports to other countries or cities disappears into oceans or lost at another country, so I reckon the most need is to help track these lost.
These may be used to help vehicles find their way around; it may guide them to the destination they plan to go. These devices have a Global Positioning Satellite, which helps track the surrounding of where you are or where you are going. It uses the satellite to track around your location and this device will show you the way on the GPS device, to show you to your destination. ]
But if I were to be able to know where everyone is…I can track down, my lost family or may be some friends if they don’t know where they are (kidnap) or even so…I might get lost or kidnap and my family or friends will know where I am so I am saved!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ok, so GPS or Global Positioning Satellite/System, they are being put into everything these days, what’s good about this,
    • Firstly, if you’re lost you could activate the GPS and you would be able to find your way to where you are supposed to be going, even missing people, people who have been lost at sea, even people who have broken out of prison if they were “inserted” some sort of chip which would be implanted under their skin or something to that effect. This would be good especially for me I’m really that good at finding my way around and me being of the female species, I would have that comfort of immediately being able to find my way around correctly and not have to be concerned about reading a road map.
    • You would be able to know where your family are, they could develop some kind of technology thing that can, if you want them to, help people who know you, like friends or family, access to your GPS so they know where you are so you can be activated at will, but then again if this fell into the wrong hands the effects I am sad to say would probably not be for the better of humanity.

The bad thing about GPS, I think, is that people you don’t want tracking your every footstep can, like the Government and stalkers. I don’t know about you but I like my privacy and I don’t like people watching me go about my everyday life, I don’t care who you think you are, the guys that have to watch what other people get up to because they are doing something illegal, they are stalkers. Its total violation of peoples privacy and it would totally suck to have GPS systems in everything, don’t deny it the Government, even though they say they already don’t do it, they would be violating our privacy and they would be using for their own big game of Big Brother. People need to know that, even though they say t wouldn’t, it is going to come down to this and yeah it might catch a few bad guys but I so don’t want to be virtually stalked, that’s just icky.
    Damn Feds, they ruin everything.

  15. Well GPS chips send and receive messages from the satellite right? Well that would mean that GPS could be used to track people down in the future. I mean look how many people go missing ever year due to some reason or the other. Police could use the GPS signals to track them down. Such as if in the future we all owned something that had a GPS chip in them (iphone, camera and GPS road map) the police would could use encryptions to allow them to locate their where a bouts. However if we do this how would our privacy be protected form others? Would we face a new technological era in crime? I mean it would be quite easy for the serial hacker to hack into technology that allows the police to track down mission people. I sure wouldn’t want this new type of crime surfacing around me.

By having this GPS chips in mostly everything we own can make life a lot easier to go places and finally get to things on time! When the iPhone brought out GPS in their phones it revolutionised phones all over the world. People were allowed access to look for places all over the world. This saved time and money because people would have to whip out the map book, and then probably miss read it and go the wrong way. Or even if people were in a hurry and didn’t have a road map, they didn’t have to stop off at the service station, they could just whip out their phone and it’ll tell them exactly where to go. Many hassles were solved when this happened but by having such a phone costed a lot of money and some features weren’t desirable to some people so how about those people? Well when technology gets more popular and they seem to be all around the place you could pick up a reasonable deal. Such as now days if people wanted to get a GPS roadmap it would only cost between $100-$200. So if GPS are built into everything (well most things) then people who aren’t exactly billionaires will be able to keep up with technology and not feel as though they are left out.

I wouldn’t be surprised if GPS were in calculators, books, shops, shops, in the city on walls, overtake phone booths and festivals (Music Festivals, The Perth Royal Show and so on). Maps will no long take up the space of you whole body but rather in the palm of your hand and offering more options such as ‘most popular places to visit’ and some on. I believe this will happen because they’re already in cars, phones, PDAs, computers, roadmaps and lots more, so why not? iPhones were just a dream ten years ago and look where it is now? This is going to be exciting and I can’t wait however like I mentioned before will this new movement make way for a new type of super crime (terrorism and so on)

  16. I guess their main use would be in locating something you’ve lost, like if your car got stolen or something then GPS could help in being able to find it (and the person who stole it). The police would be able to put it to good use (if they aren’t already). It could be used to keep track of certain criminals if they are out on probation, though this could lead to some questions about our own personal privacy. Like some people may fear that we would all have to be fitted with these GPS devices and then the government would be able to monitor our every move, or something like that. Aside from that though, I’d say that the implications for my future aren’t that big. I barely use it, aside from having a GPS navigation system instead of a road map (and I don't even drive yet, so this point is kind of invalid), but other than that, I really have no use for them.
I know this is hardly a page, but to be honest I don’t know a whole lot about GPS, and don’t have a great deal of use for it.

  17. GPS in your GPS

Well as Mr. Franco had said GPS is in Cameras, Mobile Phones (not just the IPhone), motor vehicles and other electronic devices. Now if we had GPS in everything that would mean we would have it in Computers (And i bet Apple would make there own called the IGPS), which would take away our privacy, they would most likely put it in the engine of your car so that they can track you where ever you go. I saw something on the news that said in around 5 years all cars will have it so that the government can track how much you drive and charge you for every 1km/h you do. In England right now something like this is being done (London to be precise) And its called a congestion charge. The only difference is that there id no GPS in you car its just a flat rate like Tax or GST. They may even put them in our body's! Now this would definitely take away our privacy and rights as Human beings. One good thing that would come out of this would be if you lose your keys or the TV remote you would be able to find them just by looking on your GPS. Restaurants would be easy to find too. The problem with GPS as i have said many a times is that is can be considered as an invasion of your privacy and as Humans it is our right that we have privacy, I mean whats next? Instead of Satellites pin pointing where we are they just have little cameras watching us. Now i know that sounds creepy but that is what this world is coming to. People cant even let the partners go out by them self's because they are to paranoid that they may cheat on them. To them this may seem like a god send, being able to watch and when and where there life partner is.

In Conclusion I believe that having a GPS in everything is not really that good of an idea, but like i said that is where our society is heading at the moment.

  18. GPS... is a very important technology available for us. although it is very helpful, it could be dangerous at times too. well having a GPS in everything would simply be great help, since we simply can't get lost where ever we go. it could save quite a few innocent lives out there.having a GPS in all your belonging can also help you keep them safe, because you can just simply track it down if you lost your phone or something. Although all this could come in very handy, there are downsides to it too. i mean cmon having GPS in all your belonging meaning that people could track you down anywhere you are. making you feel unsafe.
everybody can track any body. what could this cause? trust me it can cause a great deal of trouble. people'll have no privacy or what ever, human rights? yer right, u getting tracked 24/7 yeah that's HUMAN rights... so GPS in everything is both a good and a bad idea at the same time...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah, Technology like advancement in the making. What next? Macs with Wheels?! Okay, okay so I'm phoning it in with hate this time, so I'll try it your way. Gps in your iPhone! Yay! So instead of putting one in your car so you can track where the car robber had taken it and consequently your Iphone aswell. Thats it...

Honestly whats wrong with a map? Anyone with a brain can use them. Those who don't can get one by using them. So you can be tracked by yourself with the phone in your hand! Why? did you lose yourself? And what about every drug addled criminal with one too? Might aswell paint a target on yourself.

  20. Having a GPS chip in everything could come in handy when you loose you something or when your lost and need directions. It could help a lot to when people are lost in the bush our out at see or some is kidnapped, or people escape from jail and you could easily find them if they had like a GPS inserted under their skin or something, So it could be very handy and save peoples lives.
But then it can be really creepy, like you could have people stalking you and knowing were u are every second of the day. So it could be pretty scary and you would feel very unsafe. Like what happens if terrorist has all these tracking devices and weapons, it could turn out very badly.
So I don’t really get the point of having a GPS in everything, I mean we have it in phones and stuff now which is good when you need directions and stuff, but why do we need more, were doing fine with out it, I think there would be more disadvantages in having them because it is just invading peoples privacy.

  21. GPS (global positioning satellite) technology is used today in cars, phones and of course, handheld GPS devices. When GPS technology was first introduced, it was used mainly in GPS devices which show the position of the user when moving from place to place on the surface of the Earth. Soon, the technology was used in cars and software and hardware was developed to show a real time map and automatic route planning while driving. For the future, GPS technology will be integrated into things we already have as well as new devices in the same way it has now been integrated into phones such as the iPhone. My predictions include GPS in things such as: Animals, People, and stocked products. For animals, this is more likely to occur for pets, as some pets already have ID chips installed in place of a collar, so installing a GPS chip would be simple and done in the same way as an ID chip. For people, this may serve as a tracking device for lost children, or just friends and family (given the permission by the person with the chip, of course). For example, people may exchange a GPS code in the same way they would a phone number, and the user of the GPS chip would be able to conceal their location by switching the chip off for privacy. With stocked products, I am referring to food items and other parts sold at stores. Online services would allow a potential customer to search for an item and get its actual GPS location instead of a not-so-recently updated in-stock/stock notification. The chips would not literally be in food items, but instead come concealed in the packaging, deactivated when scanned at the counter and sold as to only be used for item location before purchase as mentioned above.

  22. alright now i have been thinking about this one so hard for so long, being someone who uses a gps (global positioning system)quite often, i realise how it has become so much easier and so much more helpful with its applications, and i was having a dpm (deep and meaningful)with reading this blog sob sob, anyway, i came to thinking that i know that all of these things are pretty cool how they are in phones, cars, and cameras, but i have a feeling that in the future, you will have built into the right hand side of the brain, because the right hand side is the smarter side rather than the left being the creative, yer you will have a built in gps, to make sure that you wont have the extra baggage, and you can remember things so much easier. the only negative about this idea is one word. and i dont think i can spell it right, but pedifile,, yeah something that you dont want people to have that access, to but even still maybe there will be a process that people would have to go through to get the implant thingo. so i hope that that answered the blog..

  23. GPS would have such a big impact in the world of technology. In the future this will take a whole new turn with GPS systems being in almost everything, even humans. This will mean anything that would normally get lost would not have the opportunity to get lost anymore, unless electricity is lost throughout the world, but I doubt that.
As time goes on more people would think of different ways of uses GPS systems e.g. credit cards, wives, husbands, dogs, cats, mobiles. This will make finding things a lot more easier with this system. There are some bad things about this though, like you could have people stalking you and knowing were you are every second of the day. This would be pretty scary and you would feel very unsafe. What would happen if terrorists have all these tracking devices and weapons, it could turn out very badly.
So I don’t really get the point of having a GPS in everything, I mean we have it in phones and stuff now which is good when you need directions and stuff, but why do we need more, were doing fine with out it, I think there would be more disadvantages in having them because it is just invading peoples privacy.
