Buy me a PC!

John is an average Aussie bloke who is interested in purchasing a PC for his family. Mary his wife loves to sit on Facebook chatting to all her old High School friends. She occasionally checks her email and looks through some photos. Lilly their daughter tends to play lots of music, and would love the ability to stream the music to her room somehow so it wont disturb the rest of the house. And then there is the son Sam - a mad apple kid! He loves everything Apple, and is trying to convince his dad to by an Apple computer. Sam likes to twiddle around on Photoshop, he checks his emails and likes to take thousands of digital photographs.

Given that John doesn't earn lots of money, he is having a hard time justifying why he would purchase a Mac when a PC is so much cheaper.

Discuss 5 positives and negatives for purchasing a PC, and discuss 5 positives and negatives for purchasing a Mac. John will then use this information to make his final decision. (1 page)

  1. Given that John doesn’t seem to need to do much on the computer he decides to buy, it is down to the needs of his other family members to decide what he needs to purchase. If he purchased a PC, his wife would definitely be content, as a PC provides all the functionality required to use the internet (Google Chrome is the fastest web browser and is currently PC only), check email (either using a webmail service such as Gmail, or an email program like Mozilla Thunderbird) and look at photos (Google’s Picasa is perfect for this, and runs well on a Windows-Based PC). Lily will have no problem using a PC to listen to music either using iTunes for Windows or Windows Media Player. A PC running iTunes can connect to AirTunes speakers and play music in another room, which would be ideal for her streaming needs. On the other hand, Windows Media Player can also stream music to wireless devices such as Microsoft’s Zune and the Xbox 360 (when connected to a network either wirelessly or over Ethernet), though it would be a question of whether she wants to control the music in her room (streaming with Windows Media Player) or play it on the computer and just hear it in her room (AirTunes). Music can be streamed to Apple devices but these are usually more costly and there is no point streaming music when you can store it on the actual device (iPod touch/iPhone etc.). As for Sam, he seems to have no real reason for liking Apple computers, as his only goals are to use Photoshop (which is available for PC and runs just as fast as on a Mac), check emails (can also be done on a PC) and take thousands of photos (Picasa runs on both Mac and PC and is a formidable opponent to iPhoto). Given that John doesn’t earn lots of money and all of the things required can be completed with a PC, it seems a good idea to go with a PC and the family can make some compromises, as the price difference is unjustifiable in this case.

  2. If John purchased a Mac, his wife would still be content, but may find it difficult to get used to the alternate operating system. Looking through photos may be a slight amount simpler as Picasa is not required (though it is an option) as a consumer Macintosh will come with iLife which includes iPhoto, and the Mac OS X operating system also has an integrated preview system which works well for viewing photos (cover flow may also be helpful, though bells and whistles such as this can baffle some users). Lily would be limited to streaming music using AirTunes as a Macintosh does not support Windows Media Player its advanced features such as streaming, unless running it in a Boot Camp version of Windows or on VMWare Fusion. The downside to both of these options is that if using Windows Media Player on a Mac, a copy of Windows will have to be bought on top of the price of the Mac and either used for Boot Camp (reboot into windows to stream music – this causes other problems as the music would not be accessible by one of the operating systems due to file system restrictions and would have to be placed on a FAT32 external drive or something similar) or VMWare (which will in turn cost money as VMWare Fusion is not free or cheap). The only other option given that Windows Media streaming is too inefficient is to stream with iTunes to something other than AirTunes speakers (which also cost a lot in comparison to normal speakers) meaning John will have to buy a whole other computer just to access the shared iTunes library on the Mac (best case scenario - a Netbook as it is cheap and does the job. This however, defeats the purpose of choosing a Mac for the situation as John is required to buy a small PC to complete the package) or pay for an iPhone or iPod to do the job (remembering these devices will need speakers to plug into in Lily’s room otherwise she can only play music with their inbuilt speakers or headphones, and again, they can store music so streaming seems pointless in this case). As for Sam, his fascination seems to be the only good reason to buy a Mac in this case, though assuming he doesn’t already have a copy of Photoshop, John will have to pay for this also, further adding to the cost of everything. iPhoto makes it easy to work with all of the digital photographs but again, Picasa is just as good if not better in some respects and is multi-platform.

  3. In conclusion:

    PC Negatives:

    - Lack of Mac OS X functionality (preview, cover flow etc.)
    - Less stable operating system (Windows), more vulnerable to viruses and malware unless running Linux or Unix.
    - Lack of iLife software suite (includes iPhoto, which caters for some of the family’s needs)
    - May require building. Since John is into saving money, building a PC would be the cheapest way to go but it may be confusing and complicated.
    - Sam will not be happy. He loves Macs and would probably end up trying to install a hackintosh distribution on the PC, causing it to stop functioning completely and John would be endowed with the subsequent repair bill. =P

    PC Positives:
    - Streaming to devices is easy with Windows Media Player and it literally shares the files, allowing connected devices to control what they play.
    - Google Chrome is the fastest web browser and the current version 3 is PC only at this time.
    - Way cheaper.
Apple Mac Pro 8-Core starts at $5899 USD
PC with 2 Quad Core Xeon Processors is buildable for under $3000 USD
    - Can run iTunes and complete all tasks a Mac is capable of in that regard, including iPod/iPhone remote support, streaming music, syncing with Apple Devices and sharing Music Libraries.
    - Many applications are available for the PC, Picasa replaces iPhoto, Photoshop runs, may email clients and web browsers run. (Safari and iTunes both available for PC, but there are many alternatives to these because of the PC’s wide audience, so many programs have been written.)

    Mac Negatives:
    - Expensive.
    - Operating system unfamiliar to people like John’s wife.
    - Limited in options for streaming music, most possible solutions requiring either a PC, another Mac, the Windows operating system or a Mac device such as an iPod. All of these mean spending more money.
    - Nowhere near as many applications available for Mac OS X as there are for Windows or Linux. Limited to mostly Apple software for all your needs, and although this comes with the Mac Computer, it adds to the pricetag.
    - Google Chrome, the fastest web browser, is not available for Mac. It’s Mac version, Chromium, is much slower and still in pre-beta stages. Mary and Sam (web browsing and email checking) will not get the fastest experience on a Mac, and for some, Safari is also unfamiliar in the way it functions.

    Mac Positives:
    - Almost no chance of getting a virus. There are so few viruses written for Unix (OS X runs on Unix) that it is highly unlikely that a Mac will get infected.
    - iLife comes with the system and provides all the functionality needed such as iPhoto.
    - Operating system looks nicer, as does overall physical design of the system unit in general, and crashes and other problems are rare. System works well, possibly better and more efficiently than a PC once the user becomes comfortable with the functions. (Keep in mind that a seasoned PC user will not have any more problems than a Mac user if they know what they are doing. Because Windows is less user friendly but more flexible it is easier to cause it not to function if the user is inexperienced. Someone who knows what they are doing can accomplish everything a Mac user can just as efficiently.)
    - Many functions are built-in, e.g. Bluetooth, webcam, high definition audio etc.
    - Does not require building, is completely packaged to plug in and run the way it is meant to.

  4. well, these are all in my opinion:

    PC Positives:
Easy to overclock, change hardware, get repaired etc.
HUGE range of software (especially games)
Largest range of technology available (and latest)
Cheap, plus you can negotiate different hardware pieces (since mac's all come from one company, if you say "change the price or ill go somewhere else" theyll just say "yea, good luck with that")
most widely accepted platform by both business and private use.

    PC Negatives:
    VIRUSES.
Use up a lot of power.
Very vulnerable to people who prey on those who dont know much about computers.
    can be overwhelming to novices
    can be very unstable

    Mac Positives:
    Easy to get to learn.
    little to no viruses
    Very stable
Uses a lot less power than average pc's
    lots of support

    Mac Negatives:
    Very Expensive
    Low variety of hardware
    Low variety of software
Expensive to upgrade (compared to pc's)
if some part malfunctions, you have to send the whole computer to apple.

  5. If we were to take all the needs of John's family into consideration. My current decision as to what John should buy would be a Mac. Yes, there is that extra cost but I assure you this is utterly justifiable.

    5 POSITIVES - MAC

    1) IT IS VIRUS-PROOF.
that means that his music-obsessed daughter and photo-loving son and wife can all be rest assured that the security of their beloved music and photos will be forever safe as computer reformatting is TOTALLY *rolls eyes* out of the question.

    2) INCLUDED PACKAGED SOFTWARE.
like hello? this is like uber value for money! itunes and iphoto will allow for organization and ease of finding whatever, whenever.

    3) STYLISH & SPACE SAVING DESIGN
macs are more likely to have a "wow" impression on people rather than the more common and wide used and seen pc.

    4) POWER SAVING
who doesn't want to cut down on bills? especially if john doesn't "earn that much money". pretty self explanatory. and he's saving the world at the same time :)

    5) GOOD SUPPORT
If anything "happens" to his mac, john can always call up apple and be ensured that they will help him asap and possibly give him a little "gift" as a 'sorry present'!

    5 POSITIVES of PC:

*now i don't want to sound bias but PC really can't compare to a mac. however, it has its good points and if john really is a cheapskate well by all means, a pc can serve his needs too :)

    1) EASE OF USE
very easy, simple to use. extremely user friendly, unlike a mac which takes a bit of getting used to.

    2) COST LESS
    i rest my case.

    3) DOWNLOADABLE SOFTWARE
music and photo organizing software can be downloaded and installed for use.

    4) CAPABLE OF MOST COMPUTING TASKS.
    internet, printing, photos, music.

    5) ALL OF THE ABOVE. ^^

    ReplyDelete
  6. 5 NEGATIVES OF MAC.

    1) It costs more

    2) see #1

    3) see #2

    4) see #3

    5) all of the above xP

    5 NEGATIVES OF PC

    1) subjected to virus attacks and hacking

    2) laggy at times

    3) outdated very fast

    4) terrible keyboard

    5) *blankkkk

well i need to go so you get it :)

    latersss

  8. PC Or Mac?

So your family has decided to buy a computer? But of course they are faced with the ultimate question. (Dramatic music) PC Or Mac! Well first off the best thing about (1.PC) buying a PC of course is the cost, They come pretty cheap when compared to the price of a Mac, but a PC does not come with any software unlike a (1.Mac) mac which comes with tones of free software, which is actually better then mostly software you can get for a PC. (2.Mac) A Mac also comes in one unit unlike a PC where you have to buy a monitor and tower (Main system unit) and also buy the software on top of that. (3.Mac) Apples also come with a keyboard, mouse and even built-in speakers (Hardware) which in the long run, lower the cost of a make even more when compared to a PC. Now for one of the best things about a PC .... (2.PC) YOU CAN MODIFY IT YOUR SELF!!!! You don't have to go down to your local Apple store (With your Apple of course) and ask them to fix it/upgrade it with a PC you just do it yourself! You can easily add more HDD space or RAM or even upgrade the CPU or Graphics card. Oh and also (3.PC) PCs are made for Gaming!! Yeah yeah i hear you say "My Mac can play games too" Well guess what in a Mac can you upgrade the Graphics card? Can you twit the computer to play your games to the full? Oh did I hear a no? Well that's because you cant even change the Graphics card in a Mac. And one more thing to do with Mac's and gaming is the fact that not many games support the Mac OS unlike PC which all games support. Now, back to Mac. There are (4.Mac) less computer Viruses out that can attack a Mac then compared to a PC, Which makes Mac a lot cheaper! One of the most dear things about a PC is buying the virus protection. Macs don't need virus protection because there are not enough viruses out there for Macs (Not said my me, said by someone who works for apple). And as you can guess by now, back to PC. Well (4.PC) with a PC you can change the size of your monitor which you cant do with a Mac cos' the scree and tower (as I said before) is in one unit. With a Mac though you get (5.PC) one of the worlds fastest web browsers for free! This browser is called "Safari". It was designed by apple for apple. Yeah i know you can get it on PC but on Mac it works even better. But (5.Mac) with a PC you have the chance Duel-Boot which is like having a PC and a Mac in one computer! Which means you can use windows programs in Mac and Mac programs in Windows (PC). This makes everything a lot easier but cost a fair bit because you have to buy Apple and Windows software, the computer and other components for it (Hardware and Software) and bigger HDDs to fit the two OS.

    My Discussion

If this was my Discussion I would go for Mac because if you look at this in the long run, A Mac is cheaper due to the fact that you get everything in one big package!

  9. The first question is, PC or Mac?

Deciding whether you would buy a PC or Mac is your personal preference, considering the circumstances and the programs that the family enjoy using, the Mac computer would be the better way to go overall. Why am i saying this? The reason for that would be because the Mac is more reliable than a Pc, it uses less power and is very user friendly. With these advantages it makes the computer better for the family to use.

Here are some advantages and disadvantages between a PC and Mac:

    =PC= Advantages

    -More programs
    -Ability to play Games
    -More accessibility

    =PC= Disadvantages

    -Vulnerable to viruses
    -Less Power efficient
    -Unsecure

    -----------------------------

    *Mac* Advantages

    -No threat to viruses
    -Very low power consumage
    -User friendly

    *Mac* Disadvantages

    -No ability to play Games
    -More Restriction

Overall the Mac would be the better option for the family, depending on what the computer is used for, normally a Mac computer can fit all their needs without making it too difficult to use.

If i were in this situation, i would buy a Mac because a Mac can give you opportunites to search deeper into technology.

pc are easy for people to uses
    they are cheaper
    good for paying bills
they are good to do all of the privet things like instant messaging shopping online paying bills as i said earlier.
you are able to communicate with your friends faster and easier

  11. negative things about having a pc
    pc can get viruses’
    terrible keyboard
use up a lot of power
    can be very unstable
    they are sooo slow

    ReplyDelete
  12. mac positives
    hole lot easier
    way faster
    good designs
    not dull
    fun to use

    ReplyDelete
  13. mac negatives
it is different because if you use pc a lot much like the hole of ur life its very different
    they are to expensive
They are less customizable than a PC in terms that you can't really build a MAC you have to buy them
Mac OS X doesn't support windows programs, that's the only negative point
Apple cannot stop over-charging for hardware

    ReplyDelete
  14. For the PC
    1. The PC is considerably less than a Mac in cost, therefore allowing more to be spent on making it of the needs of the family
    2. The PC is easier to obtain, as you can pick up your own from any computer store, and in some you can make your own.
    3. You can make your own PC from parts, saving money for labour allowing it to be spent on better hardware
    4. A PC has the ability to be upgraded over the years, you can replace the parts, change the data on hard drives and get a new one when the old on is full, you can upgrade the graphics card, sound card, CPU and motherboard.
    5. On the PC you have the ability to have photos, music and more on the PC and has the ability to stream music to other rooms
    Against the PC
    1. If you put a PC together yourself, there is the option of failing to do it correctly and destroying the hardware and/or software.
    2. If you have a tech kid who tries to get in to the tower and have a look, it is very easy to do so
    3. The PC can sometimes be very space consuming
    4. All the wires are exposed, leaving the option of children and rats to interfere
    5. There is a HEAP of viruses on PC and Internet Explorer
    For Mac
    1. Mac has virtually no viruses, enabling the user to surf at no risk
    2. Mac has a wealth of programs that PC don’t, iWeb, pages, iMovie, Garage Band, Final Cut, Keynote and heaps more
    3. Macs are hard to get into and therefore a curious kid cant get in
    4. Macs are very small and attractive, therefore you can effectively save space
    5. Mac has only a few wires, so it keeps things tidy
    Against Mac
    1. If a rat chews through the main wire, you are absolutely screwed
    2. When a Mac gets updated in hardware, you have to buy a new one
    3. MACS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE!!
    4. Sometimes there is too many programs to comprehend.
    5. When you buy a Mac you have to wait for shipping.

  15. John being an average bloke not earning too much doesn’t really need a computer with too many features but his family on the other hand are after specific features.
His wife Mary is only after the basics of any computer: email and web browsing both come as defaults on any computer.
Lily wants to stream music to her room which can be done with Mac airport express but also can be done on any computer it can be done with a Bluetooth dongle and Bluetooth speakers.
They’re son Sam who likes to “twiddle around in Photoshop”, does not factor in with his decision because whichever way John goes he will need to fork out money for Photoshop.
PC - Advantages (Assuming he gets vista)
    - Comes with windows photo gallery for Sam
    - Cheaper than a Mac
    - Large Software range
    - Easy and vast range of hardware upgrades
    - Includes Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
    - New ones come with Bluetooth inbuilt to stream to lily’s room
    PC – Negatives
    - Easier to get Viruses
    - Vulnerable to attackers
    - Annoying and hard to use Customer Support
    - Does not come with Photoshop
    - Not too power efficient
    Mac Advantages
    - Comes with IPhoto
    - Can get airport express
    - Comes with safari and an inbuilt email client
    - Low Power Consumption
    - No Viruses
    Mac Negatives
    - Not a big range of software
    - Expensive
    - Not as much software as a pc
    - Not as much variety of hardware
    - Not Customisable

Why is everyone complaining about PC keyboards, they’re all different

    ReplyDelete
  16. Alrighty then...

So John is looking to purchase an everyday computer from his family....and he can't decided whether to purchase a Mac or a PC..

However, John needs to consider purchasing a computer that meets the requirements of his wife and teenage children.

    5 NEGATIVES ABOUT MAC COMPUTERS

    - macs don't keep up with upgrades. it is more check out and replace entirely than upgrade programs on existing hardware.
    - if a part of a Mac 'burns out' or brokes than you again have to replace the entire Mac.
    - macs are less customizable than PCs, as you can't designing a Mac Computers to meet personal needs
    - Macs don't support Window programs fully.
    - don't have a bigger range of software and hardware available than PC.

    5 POSITIVES ABOUT MAC COMPUTERS

    - software programs (such as iWeb and iPhoto) are much simpler to use than the software programs that are available for PCs, such as Photoshop.
    - generally faster than PCs because not so much information passes through the gateway.
    - MAC computers are generally less likely to down load viruses unlike PCs.
    - MAC are cheaper in the long-run as Macs can be more durable than PCs (since again in relation to viruses etc. However, this is based on computer grades.
    - Easy photo management and editing, MACs have great inbuilt programs that deal with photo editing (and also meet Sam's requirements in regard to 'photo-shopping'.

    5 NEGATIVES ABOUT PCS

    - if to much information tries and goes through the gateway at one time, PCs often become slow.
    - PCs are more likely to download virus and often then need software to be purchased to remove the virus.
    - PCs are more likely to use up more energy than a Mac Computer.
    - Some software programs can be harder to use than Mac software programs.
    - aswell as being vulnerable to virus, PC can be more vulnerable to hackers and attacks.

    5 POSITIVE ABOUT PCS

    - PC are cheaper than a Mac computer (which is always bonus)when purchased
    - there is a bigger variety of software programs and hardware pieces that are suited to PCs.
    - if a part of the PC 'burns out' than it can be replaced without having to place the entire PC.
    - PC generally have more storage space to hold games and other random programs.
    - PCs can be customized to suit everybody's personal needs where is Macs can not..

  17. welll.. this man should buy 1 mac and 1 pc... if he cant afford both of them just do like flexirent or some 4years interest free stuff... i personally like PC cos they r easy to use and i was brought up using them..
    PC
they look good.. they come in different ranges and functions.
good things about PC they come in all different ranges, you have cheap brands like compaq then u gett better like acer then samsung etc etc. sony, toshiba delll.. heaps!!!
for MACs they have a low range of selection, even u modify the computer its pricin never goes down but up..

the good thing about MACS is tht they dont have virues..
software programs (such as iWeb and iPhoto) are much simpler to use than the software programs that are available for PCs, such as Photoshop.
    - generally faster than PCs because not so much information passes through the gateway.
    - MAC computers are generally less likely to down load viruses unlike PCs.

  18. johns needs to buy a computer, choice between Mac or a PC.

According to what his family's usage on the computer and his income, john should definitely choose a PC. Why so? it is simply because a PC cost less than Mac, and a pc can be customized to the user's personally liking and etc. with john's income, a self build PC or a outright PC is fine as the price will definitely be lower than a Mac.
But why pc? the price isnt the only thing that PC beats Mac. Pc have far more softwares and customable hardware than Mac, infact u can't tweak anything in your Mac pc without having to sent the Mac to the shop and pay to upgrade it. however there is some downside towards PC.

    5 positives about PC.
    1. Cheap, low cost compare to Mac.
    2. Good performance with a descent priced PC
    3. Customize possible, more software/hardware to use.
    4. allow gaming on your computer, something Mac can't achieve very well.
    5. Much more easier to repair and maintain compare to Mac.

    5 negative thing about PC
    1. the well known problem of PC is... virus problem.
    2. PC with not so good defences can get hacked easily.
    3. uses alot of power to run.
    4. Takes up alot of space.
    5. PC crashes easily if the user dont know what they are doing.

    5 positive about Mac
    1. immune to virus (nearly).
    2. compact and saves alot of space.
    3. comes with alot of software and packages.
    4. uses less power to run.
    5. very user friendly.

    5 negative for Mac
    1. Very little software and barely any hardware is compatible with Mac.
    2. hard maintain and can't replace part without having to buy the whole thing.
    3. No games.
    4. Costly, very costly .
    5. requires costly gadgets to do little simple tasks compared to PC.

So john... Buy a PC bro :) (Y)

  19. i reckon the cost of the computers matter. if you are not getting in great amounts of finance, it is better to get a computer that is enough for your cost.
providing for your child, is a necessity to parents but that doesnt always allow the children to get what they want.
considering the factors of both, will be better for John to decide his cost on which computer (MAC or PC)

    PC
    Negative
    1. PCs while not as User friendly
    2. PC viruses
    3. Don’t have instant wireless
    4. Can’t be kept up to date
    5. Don’t have instant connection when you plug in other devices

    Positive
    1. You can build a PC, with different parts esp. when they break down
    2. More application on Windows program
    3. PC has been around more often
    4. Cheaper than MAC
    5. Can be customized to fit everyone’s personal needs

    MAC
    Negative
    1. Less customizable than a PC
    2. If a part burns out, you can’t replace it on a MAC
    3. If you want to run PC programs on a MAC and you have to install Windows on it to use them
    4. Cost more than PCs
    5. Lesser software availability

    Positive
    1. Secure, stable and powerful
    2. Advanced operating system
    3. Brilliantly designed as the computer itself
    4. Recycled glass and aluminium
    5. Trip proof power-cord

  20. What should john get aye?

    5 POSITIVES FOR A MAC

    • You can hardly get viruses there are only a few viruses that have been made for the Mac so far.
    • You do not have to build the computer, because Macs are packaged and ready to be plugged in and run.
    • Doesn’t use as much power as a average PC would.
    • Comes with packaged software such as Iphoto, Imovie, Garage Band and many more features that are already stored into your own Mac.
    • User Friendly.

    5 NEGATIVES FOR A MAC

    • Very expensive compared to a PC.
    • The cost of upgrading is a lot more than upgrading your PC.
    • Can’t play as many games that a PC can.
    • Harder to get use to because most people are use to PCs.
    • Doesn’t have that much software compared to a regular PC.

    5 POSTIVES FOR A PC

    • A lot cheaper than a Mac.
    • Some of the new PCs come with Bluetooth so lily can get the music hooked up to her room.
    • A lot of software!
    • You can change how your PC wants to look, but Macs you cannot.
    • PCs can be repaired a lot easier, since they have been around a lot longer than a Mac.

    5 NEGATIVES FOR A PC

    • They can get viruses so easily!!
    • Can get hacked a lot easier than a Mac.
    • They can crash very easily if you do not no what you are doing.
    • Uses a lot more power than a Mac.
    • Usually a lot bigger than a Mac because you have a tower and Macs usually don’t have a tower.

  21. I believe that to meet his family's requirements, John should get both a PC and a Mac. This is because there are is a major difference between both of them and both having their own advantages and disadvantages.

    Positives for Macs:
    • You don’t have to set it up or build a Mac because you can just plug it in and start using it already.
    • Macs do not or rarely gets viruses
    • The music in the Mac is easier to use, faster at downloading, safer, has better sound and rips music CD’s faster.
    • Programs in Macs load extremely fast and does not lag.
    • Uses as much energy as a quarter of a light bulb.
    Negatives for Macs:
    • You don’t have Photoshop when you just bought it.
    • Can be very expensive
    • It can’t support some programs that a PC can.
    • Doesn’t have as many software or hardware available
    • You can’t replace a part of a Mac that is broken and you would have to buy a brand new Mac.
    Positives for PC’s:
    • You can upgrade your PC, both hardware and software.
    • Way cheaper than a Mac
    • There are many more software for a PC than for a Mac.
    • You can play games in a PC while Mac you can’t at all
    • You can repair a PC while you’ll have to buy a whole new Mac if it gets broken.
    Negatives for PC’s:
    • Really high chance of getting a virus in a PC.
    • Uses a lot of power
    • Can lag, crash, freeze or just break.
    • You have to buy things like a graphics card to upgrade your computer so you can you can play or use a certain application
    • Can be unstable

  22. If John wants to buy a pc i say go ahead. If the only thing stopping him from buying one is his son who likes photoshop and emails then a mac isn’t worth. A pc has what his son wants as well as what his wife wants. Lily can stream the music to her room via pc so there really is no point in buying a mac let alone the cost difference; a mac will cost around 2000 dollars where as a pc will cost around half of that. John needs to make his decision based on what his family needs and wants due to the lack of time he will spend on the machine.
    Positives of buying a Pc:
    1. Cheaper
    2. Gaming capabilities for Sam
    3. Basic navigation
    4. Operating system is commonly used therefore is John’s family will find it easier to use

    Negatives of buying a Pc:
    1. Becoming outdated
    2. Vulnerable to virus attacks
    3. Take up too much space on office desk
    4. Not environmentally friendly

    Positives of buying a Mac:
    1. Environmentally friendly
    2. Unable to obtain viruses
    3. Take up almost no space on the desk
    4. Programs are more entertaining

    Negatives of buying a Mac:
    1. Very Expensive
    2. Harder to navigate for a simple family like John’s
    3. Less software availabilities
    4. Not gaming compatible

  23. In this situation that john is in, he really needs to think what the family needs and not necessarily what they really want. A PC can do all of those things, it can have photoshop, it can manage photos and play music. All that is stopping him is his son Sam, but i would have to go with majority. Also because John doesnt earn a heap of money, PC (in this case) is the way to go. On the other hand Macs are a great family computer, they offer every program you can think of. But their cost is unrealistic, if they want more customers they should lower the price a bit.

    PC ADVANTAGES -
    1. you can play games
    2. Easy to use
    3. good for surfing the net with
    4. great prices
    5. The operator system is great for new people.

    PC DISADVANTAGES -
    1. Vulnerable to viruses
    2. Somtimes they can get REALLY loud
    3. Can never keep up with the new technology coming out
    4. uses lots of power
5.Annoying when the blue screen of death pops up randomly!!

    MAC ADVANTAGES -
    1. Saves a lot of power
    2. Great for media
    3. Great for a lot of programs
    4. Awesome operating system
    5. They look awesome!

    MAC DISADVANTAGES -
    1. Most games cant be played on macs
    2. Operating system looks really hard when you first try a mac
    3. Ummm... thats it
    4. cant think of any more...
    5. hmmmm....

    P.S. -
I have no idea why people are saying the mac keyboards are really bad, so what if they are bad, go and get a new one then. That is why all of the new keyboards that have been released are all USB not PS/2... this means that you can use any USB keyboard with Macs.

  25. For Mary
Both a Mac and a Pc can be used for all of Mary's requirements such as going on facebook, checking her email and looking through photos. However if Mary was to get a Mac she would probably not like the new features and would find it hard to get used to the new operating systems. So a PC would be the best option in Mary's case because it's something she's used too and a PC is a computer that has programs that can easily meet the requirements of Mary. Such as the new, fastest search engine Google Chrome, which at the moment is only PC based. E-mails can be checked via Outlook or even just by hosting websites such as Hotmail, Google and Yahoo mail. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is ideal for Mary because she is only "looking through" the photos. However if she wanted to edit then she would have to either download a simple editing program, buy an editing software program or simply use a site such as photobucket to edit her pictures (if she wants it to be free)
    For Lily
A PC would be ideal in this situation with Lilly because she only wants to really use the family computer to listen to music and stream music into her room. However I find this a little bit weird how she would want to stream her music from the computer into her room when she could buy a simple Ipod (even a shuffle if she can't afford the better models) then plug that into some mobile speakers. Because if she was going to stream that music from her computer other members of her family wouldn't be able to use Itunes to listen to their music because that would mean their music would be playing in Lilly's room.

  26. For Sam
In Sam's case using a Mac would probably suit his needs better because obviously he likes Macs and is used to their features (maybe he uses them at school). Especially if be likes to take digital photos and by being a child of the technology era he would probably want to edit them as well. As part of a Mac iPhoto comes standard, which would more that satisfy his photo importing, viewing and editing. This feature would probably suitable for Mary as well. He can check his e-mail by using iMail on Mac as well as the website e-mail engines such as gmail, yahoo and hotmail. How ever a PC can do the exact same things a Mac can. For example Photoshop can be used on a PC and Picasa can be downloaded for free (which is has nearly the same features as iPhoto)

    For John
Since John is an average bloke would most probably mean that he would like to search the web (read news, information, ect), check his e-mail and maybe use his computer for his job (Microsoft word, excel and so on). He also doesn’t earn a lot of money therefore his best bet is to buy a PC because a PC does all the things he would need to do and it'll cost him less, so why not?

  27. Conclusion
In conclusion John's family should purchase a PC because if John doesn’t earn that much money it would help his pocket whilst still doing being an outlet for all the computer needs of the family.

However I will note down the 5 negatives and 5 positives for both a PC and Macs. Just in case John sees a feature in either computer that makes him make his final decision.

    PC
    Negatives
    1. There are many thousands of virus' that are specially made to infect PCs meaning that John has a much higher chance of getting a virus or the like.
    2. The PC tower and monitor can be quite bulky and space consuming. This isn't great for John's family because knowing that he doesn’t have that much money would mean that he wouldn't have a lot of room in his house.
    3. Shutting down, re-booting and the like takes a long time, which isn't good for the family is they're in a hurry.
    4. PCs have the tendency to freeze up, which can leave the user no choice but the shut down the computer.
    5. John will have to buy software that can meet the needs of the rest of the family such as Bluetooth software for Mary and Photoshop to edit pictures

    Positives
    1. Most computer software is made for PC or PC based therefore if John or his family wanted to download or purchase a program to run they won't have the worry of "Will it work on my computer?" because it will.
    2. PCs can be customized to suit the user/s. This is great for John and his family because if he needed to change something on his PC he can such as upgrading the hardrive.
    3. Gaming games are suited/targeted at PCs
    4. Able to stream music to other places in the house/facility
    5. If a PC breaks or is damaged, it is easier to find parts and fix it. Unlike a Mac, which isn't easy to fix and is a lot more expensive.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mac
    Negatives
    1. Can't be customised
    2. Not as many choices in software programs
    3. Its pretty expensive
    4. Safari can't display all information from websites because it doesn't have plug-ins that internet explorer does
    5. New features such as one button mouse and operation system functions can be very hard to learn for first time users such as John

    Positives
    1. One, thin system
    2. Incorporated Bluetooth software
    3. Operating system is easier to use
    3. Several screens in one (spaces and expose')
    4. Iphoto, which has incorporated photo editing come standard with a Mac
    5. No need to buy expensive virus protection software because Macs don't get virus'

  29. Okay well first let’s talk about the needs of his family. None of the actually indicate that they specifically need a Mac computer other than his son “loving” them. You can get basically the same things on PC’s these days that you can get on Macs, obviously John’s wife wants to go on the internet, which is available to any computer these days, so she can “chat to her friends” she can also check her emails. His daughter can use windows media player or iTunes on a Mac and PC, she may need to use Windows media connect or Music match jukebox so that she can wirelessly stream music from the Wi-Fi network.
His son can “twiddle around” with his photos on Photoshop which you can put on either a Mac or PC, John just needs he has enough space to fit all his daughters’ music and files and his sons photos so that the computer doesn’t get to slow.

    Negatives of Macs
    • Generally more expensive
    • You can’t customize them as much as a PC you cant “build” them, you have to pretty much buy them as is.
    • When upgrading its better to just throw you Mac out and buy new
    • You can’t convert the Mac files to be shown or shared on a Pc.
    • For people who are not used to using a Mac the difference from a PC is quite substantial and personally I found it quite confusing to use a Mac.

    Positives of Macs
    • Generally Macs wont attract as many viruses as PC’s
    • You don’t have to set up a tower and all sorts, once you purchase a Mac you get it out of the box, connect it up to the power socket and internet, add your mouse and keyboard and your ready to go.
    • Can do a lot of the things a PC can do plus more
    • Can run both windows and Mac
    • Can do more cool things preloaded

    Negatives of PC’s
    • Software isn’t as good as Macs when it comes to creative/arty programmes
    • More prone to getting Viruses
    • The Software you get isn’t as fancy or nice as Macs
    • Software gets out dated easily

    Positives of PC’s
    • Generally not too expensive
    • Better for gaming
    • Most people have used PC’s before so they would find them easier to use
    • Software gets updated regulary

  31. Mac Advantages:
    1. Easier to use, once you know how
    2. Nicer to look at
    3. Safer (less susceptible to hacking, viruses, etc.)
    4. Less likely to crash
    5. Environmentally friendly

    Mac Disadvantages:
    1. Expensive!
    2. Can take a while to get used to if you were previously a PC user
    3. Can’t play games on it
    4. Less customisable
    5. Not as big a range of software (this in itself is debateable)

    PC Advantages:
    1. Cheaper
    2. Huge user support network
    3. Easy to customize and repair
    4. Support for a practically any hardware and software extensions
    5. Widely accepted in most places

    PC Disadvantages:
    1. Very susceptible to viruses and malware without the right protection
    2. More prone to crashes
    3. Uses up a lot of power
    4. Vulnerable to hackers
    5. Can be very slow

Now all these things being considered, it seems as though going with a Mac may be the best option. Sure it is more expensive, but in the long run, owning a PC may end up costing John more. Seeming as PC’s are more likely to crash, get viruses, get hacked, and get completely stuffed up in general, the money needed to repair or replace anything that stuffs up may build up to be much more than what they would have paid for the Mac. Plus there’s the added bonus of Macs being generally environmentally friendly as well as being much nicer to look at in the home. The Mac will keep Sam happy, as well as allowing for him to use Photoshop, check his emails and store the thousands of digital photos that he takes.

  32. First of all, john needs to consider the prices, of the latest computers that are out today, that cater, for the needs of his children, and his wife. Looking at the situation, I believe that it may be a smart idea to buy himself a Macintosh, since they are quite easy to get the hang of, and quite easy to use. Once you have a Mac, you can install boot camp, to cater for the needs of the rest of the family. This would be a good idea to get yourself a computer like this, because they are good for the environment, and there is a reduce of cords sitting around the room, making the user see that there is less clutter, and therefore, has a tidier clean room and also open to thoughts for future, when he may buy himself a newer computer. Personally I would go for a pc, because they are easier to upgrade. PC stands for personal computer. Meaning that it is pretty much your creation and you control how it runs, as to how much money you want to spend. Macs are more used for creativity, so Sam, his son, will have fun creating things on adobe Photoshop, sound booth, premiere pro…well actually since we are able to type in whatever, I say that pc’s are better but hey that is my opinion, and I don’t really have a valid reason for my answer but hey…

  33. Positives for purchasing a PC
    1.Its costs less
    2.Easy to use
    3.Can play Games
    4.Can communicate a lot easier
    5.Large software range

    Negatives for purchasing a PC
    1.Uses a lot of power
    2.Viruses
    3.Too slow
    4.Terrible keyboard
5.Takes up a lot of space

    Positives for purchasing a Mac
    1.No threat to virus
    2.Low consumption of power
    3.Works faster
    4.immune to virus
5.Saves a lot of space and compact

    Negatives for purchasing a Mac
    1.It’s expensive
    2.Very expensive to upgrade
    3.No games
    4.Its more complicated
    5.Less range of software

In this situation that John is in, he really needs to think what the family needs and not necessarily what they really want. A PC can do all of those things, it can have Photoshop; it can manage photos and play music. All that is stopping him is his son Sam. Also because John doesn’t earn a heap of money, PC (in this case) is the way to go. On the other hand Macs are a great family computer; they offer every program you can think of. But their cost is unrealistic. Considering the factors of both Pc and Mac John should decide to buy a Mac for his family. The cost of the computer does not matter, it’s the quality of the computer that matters and lasts for a longer time. At the end it will be worth to spend an expensive amount of money on the Mac.
